How to Care for Your Gemstone Jewelry (And Keep It Beautiful for Years)

Gemstone jewelry is an investment — in beauty, in meaning, and in craftsmanship. Whether you're wearing a delicate pearl bracelet or a bold labradorite pendant, the way you care for your pieces determines how long they'll stay stunning. Here's everything you need to know about gemstone jewelry care, straight from our studio on Florida's Emerald Coast.

Why Gemstone Care Matters

Not all gemstones are created equal. AAA gemstones — the highest quality grade — are selected for their clarity, color, and cut. But even the finest stones can lose their luster without proper care. Exposure to chemicals, moisture, and improper storage are the most common culprits behind dull, damaged jewelry.

The Golden Rules of Gemstone Jewelry Care

Put it on last, take it off first.
Perfume, hairspray, and lotions contain chemicals that can cloud gemstones and weaken metal settings. Always apply your products first, let them dry, then put on your jewelry. When you're home, remove your pieces before washing your hands or cleansing your face.

Keep it away from water.
While some stones handle moisture better than others, it's best practice to remove all gemstone jewelry before swimming, showering, or doing dishes. Chlorine is especially damaging to both stones and metal findings.

Clean gently and regularly.
For most gemstone jewelry, a soft cloth and mild soap diluted in lukewarm water is all you need. Use a soft-bristled brush (a baby toothbrush works perfectly) to gently clean around settings. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry — never air dry, as water spots can form.

Avoid ultrasonic cleaners.
These are fine for diamonds, but many gemstones — including pearls, opals, and emeralds — can crack or lose their finish in ultrasonic cleaners. When in doubt, stick to the gentle hand-cleaning method above.

Storing Your Gemstone Jewelry

Proper storage is just as important as cleaning. Follow these guidelines:

  • Store pieces individually in soft pouches or a lined jewelry box to prevent scratching
  • Keep jewelry away from direct sunlight and heat, which can fade certain stones
  • Store pearls flat (never hanging) to prevent the silk cord from stretching
  • Use anti-tarnish strips in your jewelry box to protect metal components

Special Care by Stone Type

Pearls: The most delicate of all. Wipe with a soft damp cloth after every wear — your skin's natural oils can dull the nacre over time. Restring pearl necklaces every 1–2 years if worn regularly.

Turquoise & Opals: Porous stones that absorb chemicals easily. Keep away from all cleaning products and perfumes. Never submerge in water.

Quartz, Amethyst & Citrine: More durable, but can fade with prolonged sun exposure. Store away from windowsills.

Labradorite & Moonstone: Clean with a damp cloth only. Avoid harsh chemicals that can affect their signature iridescent flash.

When to See a Jeweler

If a stone looks loose in its setting, don't wear the piece until it's been checked. A lost stone is far more costly than a quick repair. We recommend having your fine jewelry inspected once a year — especially pieces you wear daily.

Caring for your gemstone jewelry doesn't have to be complicated. A few simple habits go a long way toward keeping your pieces as beautiful as the day you first wore them.
